While we have all heard stories that the United States has 200 years worth of coal in reserves, some recent analyses suggest that this estimate is very much overstated, and that coal production may also decline in a few years. ,

Calm down Tom, it's just a tartan skirt with long socks. We Scotsmen have been wearing them for years, but you don't get Wired magazine using us as a cultural barometer for all that's new and trendy, do you?

I'm in Abruzzo, Paucus. I am from the Far North, but the Far North of Scotland where I grew up eating far worse stuff than any of this. I'll have to take your word for the Zampone; I've only tried the packaged stuff that they put in my work's Xmas hamper and it was truly fowl.

I agree that Italian food is more complex than thought, and one of the great things about traveling around Italy is how the dishes change from region to region. I wrote the post because of the "Bella Pasta" image that pervades of Italian cuisine outside of Italy and which gets on my nerves to be honest.

then you were probably living in Emilia at the time of writing. Apologies for saying that it takes someone from the far north to mix together Zampone, Salama da sugo and Simmenthal. The latter, btw, is not "italian" but is made by kraft food corporation. In its defence; it's WAY better than Spam and saved me from starvation in one or two situations. Yes, Italian mothers can be very lazy (like mothers everywhere) and serve it too much as dinner but won't kill you and it's cheaper than prosciutto. Zampone is absolutely fantastic if you stay clear from the packaged ones. With mashed potatoes and lentils on the side... heaven. Salama is very much like haggis, they both stink like feet but when you eat them the flavor is quite bland. But I agree in part, I guess you need to be raised around it to like it. My defense of brain would be weak since I didn't eat it since I was a kid. May I, however, mention that marrow is another absolute delicacy you can rarely eat outside Italy...
Panini aside, Italian cuisine is more complex than most people would ever imagine....
Cheers!

For 20 years I have had some cash crisis, procrastination, feeble delay which has prevented me heading east instead of west. Having spent the last 9 years travelling some 15 times to Mexico hasn't helped allow for spare time (and spare Scots Pounds).

Still I've got a wee cash reserve, as my last motorbike purchase fell through...so I'm aiming for a Tokio, Kyoto, Hiroshima trip in the coming 9 months (he says!). I must go!!

Have a great time over there

Jimmy, yup, I got a cheap(ish) flight from Japan Airlines and I'm off. (I'll try to remember to bring you back some Hello Kitty chopsticks).

It will actually be my second time there, and I have to say that it is the probably the best place I hve been on holiday. It'd nowhere near as expensive as you may think and places like Kyoto and Nara are incredible.

You are going to Japan next month!?

Brilliant!!

I am ready with numerous adjectives of envy!!

A friend of mine was there last year and another just went out on a lightening visit this week - to climb Fuji of all things.

It is the one place that facinates me and yet I've never got there...yet.

Enjoy the visit and don't forget to send a Postcard!

Stuart, I hope the reasoned and informed discussion above provided you with the basic facts you were looking for. As a Hurricane man myself, I have to say I was leaning towards the Spitfire because of Oswaldo's "If the Hurricane was so great why did they invent the Spitfire?" question, and then your "Achtung Spifire" point seemed to have clinched it. But then I thought "hold on, just how historically accurate were those old Commando comic books anyway? And maybe the German soldiers in the stories (who didn't seem to be highly educated judging by their limited vocabularies) were confusing the Spitfire with the Hurricane? I think the jury's still out on this one.

You guys are hilarious

I came here looking for basic facts, actually because i googled "difference between hurricane spitfire" (because google ignores 'and' anyway so it's a waste of time. I digress..

I was in need of information for the difference-telling-of the aformentioned 'crates,' so in that respect I am not a real man. But then, grandad (who didn't fly them but got taken up in one or two as he was a mechanic) told me the difference when i was about 6 or 7, and I'd just forgotten which one had the eliptical wing tips and the flat back, and which had the round wingtips and the 'hump.'

The Spitfire was developed, i think, as a reaction to the 109, who were indeed, as Mr D rightly points out, handing out arses to pilots. The Spitfire had a far superior ceiling of action - a good 3000 feet above the heads of the 'bosh' (ROFL@Napolean's comment about steely determination, a hatred of the Bosch, a mighty Merlin engine and a thirst for glory, but no I can't work out which way his vote is directed either...). In a dogfight, that extra elevation is the deciding factor, pretty much. That, and screaming along at 450 miles an hour, going "taallllyyyyyy - hooooooooooooooooooooo"

The spitfire won the hearts and minds of the nearly broken British public. They saw the spitfire floating effortlessly above them, literally looping around the German's, and they knew they would never be invaded.

1 vote for the Spitfire.

Planet Caravan is a good name there's no doubt about that. Should you ever want to pick up the 70s/80s Metal theme there are plenty of adherents willing to follow the threads and throw in some headbanging anecdotes

Jimmy, oddly enough I am considering starting a blog where every now and again I would post something about 70s and 80s Metal. It's one of the things I have enjoyed blogging about and the banter is usually good. Plus, I've even had people from Snakebite and Wykkd Vikker commenting! I was thinking of doing it a while back, but never got round to it. Besides, somebody had already taken the name I was going to use, Planet Caravan. Bastards!
